Have you ever wondered how they gold-plate roses?
First the rose is sealed with an epoxy resin that they spray on in a very thin coat. When the epoxy dry, they get some copper conductive paint and spray that over the epoxy. They then wait for it to fully dry. Then they apply a gentle current and soak the rose for a couple of days in a cold solution of blue copper salt, water, and an acid. This adds a film of bright copper on the rose. Next comes another solution to layer a film of equally bright nickel. Finally they electrolyze the rose in a gold salt solution for a long period of time and then rinse it thoroughly.
It all takes about four days and involves some 40+ steps. It is an amazing technique that takes a tremendous amount of time and skill. It's labor-intensive, and takes a lot of practice. This is the same process that is use for platinum covered roses and silver covered roses.
